Cree: Technical Progress Impulses LED Lighting Innovation

Cree, as the world's leading LED semiconductor lighting manufacturer, has always committed itself to promoting lighting industry by technology. Norbert Hiller, Vice President and general manager of LED, in an exclusive interview by CHINA LED, gives an interpretation of Cree's latest technology and development concepts to readers around the world.
A few days ago, Cree announced in America that at standard room temperature, with drive current up to 350 Am, and a correlated color temperature of 4408K, the actual measured light efficiency of the newly developed white power LED in the lab reaches 254 lm/W, breaking the record of lighting industry.
"The third generation of Cree lighting, XLamp LED, adopts the innovative SC3 technology platform (the third generation of silicon carbide), which is the key to the research achievement. The innovative SC3 technology platform adopts silicon carbide (SiC) technology, Cree's leading technology in the lighting industry. LED chip structure and fluorescent power performance are extraordinary. Together with the matched newly packaging technology, they help Cree present the most advanced LED devices in lighting industry.
Norbert Hiller says that Cree will keep making every endeavor to provide lighting products with better luminous efficiency for customers. Compared with the second generation, the new products are smaller in size, but higher in luminous efficiency. Therefore, it explores new application areas. For example, it can be applied to period-luminosity bulbs with smaller surface.
As to the high prices, Norbert Hiller explains that one dollar can buy 400 lumen now instead of 200 lumen, and, therefore, from this perspective, Cree provides better new products with higher luminous efficiency and reasonable prices. In the future, Cree will continue its efforts in the research of higher luminous efficiency.
In today's world, low carbon and emission reduction are given more attention. In the lighting market, Europe takes an account of 25% of the global market, America 24%, China 20%, and Japan 10%. The data above show that lighting energy is mostly consumed in developed countries and areas. These countries and areas are in higher need of energy, and their concepts are more advanced with stronger environment awareness. Norbert Hiller points out that LED products are mostly promoted in these areas. As to the developing countries with lower economic developing level, it is not practical to popularize the use of LED products at the preset stage, for the small account of lighting demand and their buying ability.
The prices of Cree products are regulated all over the world. In the market of China, most LED products sold in mainland China are outdoor lights, such as streetlights and tunnel lamps, while the indoor LED lighting products, such as bulbs, are not acceptable to average consumers for the prices. A traditional light bulb only costs 0.4 dollar, while a LED light bulb costs 7 dollars. The sharp contrast in prices will prevent consumers to use LED lights in advance. Even with the slight reduction of prices, average people will find it hard to accept the prices. However, outdoor lighting products, such as streetlights and tunnel lamps are bought by governments who pay more attention to the quality and functions, and are less sensitive to prices.

High-performance LED not only realizes the combination of better creativity and more effective application, but also dramatically and effectively reduces the cost of LED design and overall solution.
